A shocking video is going viral on social media since many days. In the latter, you can see hundreds of sheep circling a field in northern China. A very strange behavior, especially since the animals have been walking in the same direction for ten days, making an almost perfect circle.
China’s state-run People’s Daily, which originally shared the video, said the sheep were perfectly healthy and that such behavior was inexplicable. The farmer, who owns 34 sheepfolds, explained that only the sheep of 13ᵉ sheepfolds are affected by this phenomenon. He said that at first only a few sheep start walking in a circle, before the whole flock joins them.
Some people on social networks have tried to explain the animal’s behavior. Thus, the hypothesis of a bacterial disease called listeriosis, sometimes nicknamed the disease of the circles, has been raised. The latter usually affects ruminants. The virus inflames one side of the brain, which explains the animal’s circular movements. Nevertheless, this track seems unlikely as in normal times the animal usually dies within 24 to 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. The mystery remains complete…
