In a nutshell: the lion is a lion. It does what it wants and what it has to do. Worrying about what his prey thinks of him is useless. Their opinions have no consequence. Thinking about it at all is a waste of lion’s time.

Which brings me to the curious case of Donald Trump and the Lincoln Project.

The latter probably don’t. The Lincoln Project was formed late last year by some of the most important “Never Trumpers” in the country: George Conway, husband of Trump’s senior adviser Kellyanne Conway, and Republican advisors John Weaver, Steve Schmidt and Rick Wilson.

This is their ideal scenario. They literally don’t have the money to buy this type of advertising for their ad. Now a lot of people who read Trump’s tweets or see him hammering the Lincoln Project outside the White House on Tuesday will go up to their computers and search for “Lincoln Project”. And look at the announcement “Mourning in America”.
It’s a gigantic victory for what it is, in truth, a small group of eminent talking heads who were – and Trump is right about this – completely crushed by him and his allies during the 2016 campaign.
Trump’s inability to ignore the renegade rumors within his party is a violation of the campaign’s basic rules. The more he talks about the Lincoln Project – no matter how negatively – the better it is for the profile of the group and the ability to raise funds to oppose its reelection.
Trump’s best strategy for dissenting voices within his party would be to ignore them and remain silent. But it’s not really a skill he possesses.
