LOS ANGELES/New York (AP) — The remake of the Shakespeare classic “Macbeth” will celebrate its world premiere in New York with top-class Oscar winners Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) and Denzel Washington (“Training Day”).
According to organisers, “The Tragedy of Macbeth” will be the opening film at the New York Film Festival in late September. Released by Drama Studio A24 and Apple Original Films.
The director is Joel Coen (“Fargo”, “No Country for Old Men”), who has been married to McDormand since 1984 and who often brings her in front of the camera. In late April, the actress won the Oscar for Best Leading Actress for “Nomad.” Joel’s brother Ethan is usually involved in Coen projects as a producer, director or screenwriter. “Macbeth” is a solo project by Joel, who also scripted and produced.
William Shakespeare’s tragedy from 1606 revolves around a power-hungry, unscrupulous prince (Washington) who, with the help of his wife Lady Macbeth (McDormand), seeks to become king of Scotland. Australian Justin Kurzel brought Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard to the camera as the killer couple in 2015, following the adoption of the screen by Orson Welles (1948) or Roman Polanski (1971).
