Sofia Popov was a little-known underdog when she reached the women’s British Open last year, but returns 12 months later as the German defending champion.
Popov is gearing up for the last major tournament of the season in Carnoustie and is facing a lot of attention compared to last year before heading out on Thursday.
Ranked 304th at the start of the 2020 Open, he returned to Scotland in 28th place after securing his life-changing victory at Royal Troon.
“I am very excited,” the 28-year-old said. “This week of last year changed my life. So far it’s been amazing.
“From the moment I saw my designated parking space and saw my face on the billboards.
“It brings back so many memories for me and I’m determined to make the most of every minute.”
Popov followed up his victory at Tron with several good results and has already secured his place in the Solheim Cup for the game against the United States next month.
“It’s amazing. I think I’ve made my way into the team and it promises to be a great week. I’ve had many discussions with (European captain) Catriona Mathieu and she’s helped me a lot,” They said.
After winning the Open under coronavirus restrictions, Popov is thrilled to have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience this time around.
“I’m almost as happy for them as I am,” she said.
He also appreciates the attention of his peers.
“It’s a lot of fun. There’s a TV loop from last year’s championship in the player lounge. Everyone would be sick of seeing me,” he said.
“I am generally a very polite person and stay away from the limelight. But I know I can’t this week, so I’ll take it.”
