The students’ council in Hanover called for free tampons and pads to be made available in schools. Initially it should be tried out in 20 schools in collaboration with the city.

By the summer, it should be evaluated how well the concept works and how high the cost is. It aims to address the insecurities of schoolgirls during puberty and create a pleasant work environment. One role model is Scotland, where politicians have been providing free menstrual supplies in schools since 2018.

The Greens and SPD are behind the students’ application. Representatives of both sides sat with the city student council and discussed the application. According to information from the NDR in Lower Saxony, the CDU is also in principle in favor of it, but wants to estimate the cost before the pilot phase and ask schools that are already providing menstrual articles. . Next Wednesday, the application will be discussed in the Education Committee.
