Search is on for two tourists who went missing at different places in Austria. It belongs to a German climber (54) and a 19-year-old Dutchman. The latter has been missing for almost a week. “He last had contact with his family on Sunday,” a police spokesman told Algemein Dagblad (AD) in the Netherlands.
According to police, the 19-year-old probably climbed a hill in the Sill Gorge near Innsbruck in southwestern Austria. “He called up the family members around 7 pm on Sunday, but suddenly the connection was cut. Did he lose reception or did his cell phone battery run out? We don’t know,” said an Innsbruck police press spokesperson.
An immediate search was launched on Sunday evening. Police deployed a helicopter and sniffer dogs and enlisted the help of a mountain and water rescue team. There was no trace of the missing Dutchman from the operation. He reached the Alpine city on Saturday. “Obviously for a few days off,” the spokesperson continues.
Nothing has come out of the 19-year-old’s mobile data so far. “The last signal from the device was picked up near Sill Gorge.” The police distributed a photograph of the man at the request of his family. The name and place of residence of the missing person have not been disclosed.
The police have received some tips about the Dutchman in recent times. “They may have been seen elsewhere in Tyrol and even in Styria (in the green heart of Austria, ed.),” the spokesman said. On checking the tips, no trace of the 19-year-old has been found so far. “In the meantime, we will continue to trace his cell phone.”

A 54-year-old German climber, who went missing near Leutash, some 30 kilometers northwest of Innsbruck, has also been sought since Tuesday. He set out for a journey from Lutsch-Ahrn via the Ahnplatenspitze, a 2196-metre-high mountain peak on the border of Austria and Germany.
When he did not return to his residence till 11 pm, his wife informed him about his disappearance. She had last contacted her husband via text message at around 4.50 pm on Tuesday. The same evening, a search was launched which continued till 01:25 AM. The search resumed at 7 am on Thursday. The Austrian and German mountain rescue services were assisted by four police helicopters. Despite this, no trace of the missing German was found. The search for the German was also unsuccessful on Friday.
