Sturgeon sees UN world climate summit as last chance

Edinburgh – Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon sees the United Nations World Climate Summit COP26 in Glasgow as the last opportunity to achieve the 1.5 degree climate target agreed in Paris in 2015. That’s what Sturgeon said at the end of his Scottish National Party (SNP) convention on Monday. “No one underestimates the extent of the challenge,” she said. “But no one should underestimate the impact on lives – especially the lives of the world’s poorest people – if we do not face this challenge.”

The Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to below two degrees, if possible, to less than 1.5 degrees. However, the Earth has already warmed by about 1.2 degrees compared to pre-industrial times. The World Climate Summit is hosted by the British Central Government from 31 October to 12 November in Glasgow, Scotland. Earlier a youth conference would be organized by the Scottish regional government, Sturgeon said. “We cannot allow the children and young people of the world to remain silent in Glasgow on an issue that is of great importance to their future.”

Recently, the SNP and the Scottish Greens signed a cooperation agreement on the joint government of the British part of the country. Both sides are committed to seceding from Great Britain. However, in the election campaign for the 2014 independence referendum, which ultimately failed, the SNP relied heavily on income from oil and gas production in the North Sea.
