Tanzanian writer Abdulrajak Gurna, Nobel Prize winner in Literature

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Thursday that Tanzanian novelist Abdulrajak Gurnah is the winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Announcing the UK-based author’s coronation, the Academy said she deserved the award for her “sympathetic and uncompromising description of the effects of colonialism and the fate of refugees caught between cultures and continents”.

Gurna was born on the island of “Zanzibar” in Tanzania in 1948, and arrived in the UK as a refugee as a youth in the late sixties.

The Tanzanian novelist has published ten novels and several short stories. The theme of the refugee crisis and upheaval is prominently featured in most of his works.

His most famous book, “Paradise”, was published in 1994 and tells the story of a boy who grew up in Tanzania at the turn of the 20th century. According to the BBC, the work won the Booker Prize, one of the most prestigious literary prizes dedicated to fiction novels.

The Nobel Prize offers a gold medal and 10 million Swedish crowns (over $1.14 million), thanks to a bequest left by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1895.

German researchers Benjamin List and Scottish David Macmillan won the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry on Wednesday for their work in developing “asymmetric organocatalysis.”

Three other scientific researchers who won the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday are Japanese-American Soukuro Manebe, German Klaus Hasselmann and Italian Giorgio Paris, in recognition of their “leading contributions to the understanding of complex physical systems.” “.

American researchers David Julius and Erdem Patpoutian won the 2021 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discoveries of temperature and touch receptors.
