Ankara – President Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan hopes the new constitution being drafted for the country will be more democratic and ready for public debate in 2022.

He said the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) would complete the work on a new constitution.

In a report released by Memo on Thursday (7/10/2021), Erdogan said, “If we can come up with a constitutional proposal from the other side, we can finish work on Turkey’s first civilian draft constitution by the end of the year.” Huh.” .

The president then criticized the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) for amending the first four articles of the constitution and pledging to secretly cooperate with the pro-PKK People’s Democratic Party (HDP). According to Turkish law, the first four articles cannot be changed.

In May, AKP ally, Devlet Bahceli, also drafted a new constitution for the country, considering changes to the judicial system.

Erdogan’s call for a new constitution came four years after a referendum in 2017 to amend the current constitution, which gave more executive powers to the presidency.
