The typhoon first struck China’s mainland in Zhejiang province, south of Shanghai, on Sunday, where more than 1.5 million people were evacuated.
It then moved north, around noon local time, with the center of the storm 60 kilometers southwest of Shanghai, with winds of about 100 kilometers per hour.
