USPS According to David Rupert, strategic communications manager at Brookings U.S. Post Office Fees will be back in business tomorrow, December 3rd.
After visual inspection, real-time air monitoring, and complete elimination of environmental hazards due to mercury leaks from package cages, post office fees are now considered safe for employees and customers.
Update! 3:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
According to David Rupert, Strategic Communications Manager at USPS, the environmental crisis was a trace amount of mercury that was improperly shipped from the package.
By 3:15 p.m., 2 crew were still working to complete the cleaning and testing.
“It feels good,” Rupert said. It will give an update after 7pm when work is estimated to be completed.
The Brookings postal mail was delivered today, according to Rupert. Mail carriers arrived early in the morning at Gold Beach Post Office Fees to sort mail for local delivery. Unfortunately, P.O. Boxes were not available to customers today.

USPS Brookings Postal Mail will be delivered today, according to David Rupert, Strategic Communications Manager. Mail carriers currently sort mail for delivery locally at Gold Beach Post Office fees.
Unfortunately, P.O. Boxes will no longer be available to customers today.
If you must send a package today, the nearest post office is located at Fish Smith River, CA.
An environmental cleanup crew from Northern California and Portland arrived in Brookings Post Office Fees around 2 a.m. this morning, Rupert said. The mercury leak is from a package that was mailed incorrectly. Cleaning is now underway. Surfaces and air are being tested, and they will check how much mercury was in the package and how much is missing. Rupert described it as a “low dose”.
“We bring in the best people,” Rupert said. “We have to protect the public and protect the employees. The post office was closed as a precaution.”
Rupar apologized for the inconvenience, saying the post office fee would probably not reopen today.
Rupert is expected to know the extent of the cleanup by 1pm today, and we’ll update this story with new information.
Received a message from USPS at 8:34 a.m.:
Temporary postal closure. Brookings, located at 711 Spruce St., has been temporarily suspended due to leakage of improperly mailed packages containing mercury, post office fees, boxes and delivery operations. This is an immediate suspension of the office, not a permanent closure. Additional details will be provided as they become available in connection with the reopening of this office fee. “The safety of our employees and customers is paramount,” said Postmaster Yvonne Houston. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers and we are working to find a solution quickly.
