Hurricane Nora hits the Pacific coast of Mexico

A week after Grace passed, Hurricane Nora hit Mexico on Saturday evening, bringing heavy rain to the state of Jalisco on the Pacific coast. The eye of the storm, Category 1 of which is 5 on the Saffir–Simpson scale, made landfall at 00:00 GMT (02:00 on Sunday in Switzerland) “in the vicinity of Tomatlán (Jalisco). It changed its trajectory towards Nayarit. Will continue”, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) indicated.
According to the latest bulletin from the US Hurricane Center (NHC), the storm brought “very heavy rain along the coasts of the states of Jalisco and Nayarit throughout the night and may extend to Sinaloa during the night”. SMN said about 150 to 250 mm of rain has already fallen in the region and waves reach 3 to 5 meters on the beaches of Colima and Jalisco.
The storm caused some damage in Jalisco, where officials reported landslides on a national road, as well as the closure of a section of motorway in Cihuatlán due to damaged homes and fallen trees. . No one was reported to be injured.
Jalisco officials called on residents to stay home, and Puerto Vallarta’s international airport has been closed since Saturday afternoon. Fifteen shelters have been set up and rescue teams have been deployed to help the population.
“Parallel to the Coast”
At 3:00 GMT on Sunday (5:00 am in Switzerland), the storm was 85 km south/southeast of Puerta Vallarta, Jalisco, and 485 km from Cabo San Lucas, Baja California. According to NHC, it was moving north at a speed of 26 km/h with sustained winds gusting to 130 km/h.
The eye of the storm “will continue to move near the coast of Mexico for the next few hours” before moving through the Gulf of California, the NHC said. The US Hurricane Center, however, does not rule out that Nora may change direction inland and dissipate.
A week earlier, Mexico was hit by Hurricane Grace, which made landfall in Veracruz (East) as a Category 3 hurricane. The Way of Grace had killed eleven people in this state and in Puebla (centre) in that state. Damage was also reported in the center and east of the country from cracked roofs, damaged roads and power cuts.
Grace touched down on Mexico twice, the first time off the Caribbean coast with no casualties or major damage; Then two days later, becoming a “major” Category 3 hurricane, it struck the state of Veracruz with winds of 205 km/h, before weakening and moving toward the Pacific on Sunday.
