Anna Nordquist wins British Open on the line

Anna Nordquist crowned extremist at Carnoustie. The world’s 54th Swede won the women’s British Open golf course on Sunday, taking advantage of her opponent Nanna Korstz Madsen making a decisive mistake on the last hole.

Already titled in the LPGA Championship in 2009 and Evian in 2017, Nordquist won the third major title of his career at 34.

“I’ve been waiting for this for a long time, the last few years have been tough,” said the Swede, happy to win in Scotland where her husband is.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything better than a win at the Carnoustie Women’s Open. This place is really special,” she said.

“The supporters have been great and my caddy is Scottish too. Both inspired me. It’s great to be in the crowd again this year,” Nordquist said.

With a card of 69 for Sunday’s final round, she completed 12 strokes under par, one short of Georgia Hall, Madeleine Sagström and Lizet Salas.

Very good omen, two weeks before the Solheim Cup, the women’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup in Toledo (USA), where Nordqvist should be part of the European team for the seventh time.

The Swede had started the day with Nanna Korstz Madsen, and it would have been enough for the Dane to equalize on the 18th hole to secure the win.

But his second shot ended in a bunker, and he ended the hole with a double bogey. With a card of 71 on Sunday and 10 strokes in all four laps, Koertz Madsen finished 5th alongside Australian Minji Lee, who was recently crowned at Evian.

World No. 1 Nelly Korda, who finished with 72 cards, equalized six strokes, finishing 13th with six other players.
