(Copenhagen) Ontarian Katie Vincent won the 200m in C1 at the World Canoe Sprint Championships on Sunday.
Vincent had never won a medal at such a distance in this event.
His teammate and C2 teammate Laurence Vincent-Lapointe had won six of the last eight titles.
Vincent beat Spain’s Antia Jacom (46.79) and Pol Dorota Borovska (46.90) with a timing of 46.52 seconds.
“It’s taken a lot of hard work over the years to get there,” said the Mississauga athlete. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
“I really feel like this is a start for me. I’m really looking forward to the world championships at home next year.”
Vincent lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and the next edition of these Worlds will be held in Halifax, August 3-7, 2022.

Laurence Vincent-Lapointe and Katie Vincent won bronze medals in the C2 500 meters at the Tokyo Games.
“I’ve had ups and downs since Tokyo,” Vincent said. There were, and still are, a lot of emotions and things to deal with. It moved me forward, and I reconnected with my love for the sport. ”
New Zealander Amy Fischer won her first world title in the K1 500, a race in which her teammate Lisa Carrington was the current world champion and current Olympic champion.
Fischer has been controversially left out of the New Zealand team from the Tokyo Games.
“This win is very special for everyone at home,” Fischer said.
“It was difficult. There were times when I wanted to walk away and give up, because I didn’t think I could. But it’s the icing on the cake to show me that I can do it.”
Italians Nicolae Cressune and Daniele Santini prevailed in the C2 500, which will be added to the Paris 2024 Olympic programme.
Hungary and Russia finished second and third respectively.
Spain’s Marcus Walz and Rodrigo Germed won the K 2 500, an event that will also be added to the 2024 Olympic calendar.
Germany won the silver and Slovakia the bronze.
Belarus’s Marharta Makhneva, Nadzeya Liapeshka, Volha Khudzenka and Marianna Litvinchuk won the women’s K4.
Hungary and Russia completed the podium.
