Düsseldorf It’s an almost unimaginable area: a solar park in East Germany with a capacity of one gigawatt (GW) would have to be about as big as 1000 football pitches. The lignite company league of all people wants to build and operate it.
After Essen Energy Giant RWE Cottbus’ company is one of the largest emitters of climate-damaging CO2 in Europe. It should change. “We are taking a 180-degree turn and want to build renewable energy instead of lignite and produce green hydrogen,” league boss Torsten Kramer announced in an interview with Handelsblatt.
The solar park planned in the new strategy is the first permanent large-scale project. About 1.5 million solar modules are to be installed over the next three years at former opencast mining sites in the Lausitz area.
The estimated cost of the league on the planned solar system will be 600 million euros
