The list of South Africa’s senior women’s national football team for the COSAFA women’s tournament was unveiled on Monday. A group of 20 players were called home for the regional tournament to be held from 28 September to 9 October.
Defending COSAFA Cup champion Banina Banyan is at stake after winning the competition in the last four editions. They are entering with great momentum after winning the first Ayesha Buhari Invitational tournament in Nigeria.
Janine van Wyk will be the only foreign player to be part of the team as the tournament does not appear on the FIFA calendar and selection is mainly focused on local players. The team’s first training session was on Monday afternoon as part of preparations for the opener against Malawi on Tuesday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in South Africa.
