Review: Croatia – Spain Euro 2016 . Feather

There is an old saying that the best teams develop in a tournament and Croatians hope this applies to them as well. Zlatko Dalik’s team did little in the opening loss against England. In the second half of the 1–1 draw against the Czech Republic, the team came alive and finally reached the Round of 16 against Scotland. But history speaks against Croatia, who have lost all three last knockout games at Euros.

The way in Spain was similar. Draws against Sweden and Poland lacked creativity, but Luis Enrique’s team regained their form and reached the Round of 16 with a 5–0 win against Slovakia. So they are still unbeaten – just like in all three tournaments in which they were able to lift the trophy at the end.

We have to remember that attack can also be a means of defence.”

Mateo Kovačić, Croatia midfielder: “A tough game awaits us. Spain are a great team that loves possession and loves to play their game. It will be important for us to try to get the ball as far as possible which They are loving the most.”
