In a low-scoring and erroneous affair with two more teams already injured, the Eagles put the 49-leaders ahead 8-7 at halftime. Things started to slow down, with Carson Ventez throwing his first throw to the ground and later blocking Philly’s second drive of the game. He eventually found something of a rhythm with wide receiver Greg and Ward, but Wentz did the most damage in the first half with his foot, running 24 yards and three runs for the score, after which Eagle added a two-point conversion. Miles Sanders struggles to get untracked, but it makes some sense to start the game with three offensive linemen from the side and Lane Johnson’s early departure to face the Pro Bowl.
On the other side of the ball, Nick Mullens got George Kettley (6 out of 6 for 89 yards) but he was struggling to pass to anyone else (3 out of 8 for 30 yards and an obstacle). He made the bad decision to pay the Ninners a chance on a scoring drive, which would have given them the lead. Most likely, he was only asked to take the ball into the hands of Kettley, Debo Samuel (two touches, one catch and run, for 27 total yards) and Brandon Ayuk. Ruchi took a smoke screen from the mule to the 38-yard home, breaking some tackles and obstructing the defender along the way. (The play was a run-of-the-mill rule as the pass went backwards.)
Each team had plenty of chances to score in the second-quarter, but could not manage to put up a full drive as well. And so, we entered the half with a score of 8-7 Philadelphia.
