A look at what’s happening around European soccer on Thursday:
Euros playoffs
Four playoff games will determine who completes the 24-nation lineup for next year’s epidemic-delayed European Championships. All must be compromised on Thursday, in extra time or in a penalty shootout, if necessary. There will be at least one winning tournament, with tournaments outside of the world’s top 50 national teams. Georgia hosts North Macedonia in the playoff finals of the fourth tier teams. Hungary hosts Iceland in a match of teams that also met in Euro 2016. Northern Ireland allows fans to keep fans in the only playoffs allowed by local health regulations – about 1,000 – in the stadium. Serbia hosts Scotland. The stakes are probably higher for Hungary and Scotland. They are among the 12 host countries of the Penn-Continental Euro 2020. If they go ahead, their prize is two home games in the group stage next June.
England vs. Ireland
England manager Gareth Southgate’s priority is the upcoming Nation League games against Belgium and Iceland. So it is going to be the right start for the friendly match against Ireland by Rees James who has been suspended for that match. Nick Pope could be in goal more than Joachim Pickford. Former Irish young internationals Michael Keane and Jack Grillish could also be involved at Wembley Stadium, as Declan Rice represents the country at the senior level on three occasions. The biggest moment could be the debut for 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, who is on the line to become England’s third youngest player.
Vals V.S. United States
The epidemic has brought Americans back for the first time since February. Mainly Europe-based players have traveled to Wales due to the upcoming Major League Soccer playoffs. Borussia Dortmund could enter international cricket by attacking midfielder Giovanni Rena, the 17-year-old son of former Manchester City player Claudio Reina. Ryan Giggs will not lead Wales for this friendly after his arrest, although he will be consulted by caretaker coach Robert Page. Giggs will also be missing from the trenches for the upcoming Nations League match after police arrested him in connection with an alleged incident with his girlfriend earlier this month. The 46-year-old Manchester United star has been released on police bail and denied any wrongdoing. Gareth Bale is back in the Wales controversy after missing last month’s game due to a Tottenham forward injury.
