Daniel Gonneville, 35, of Cape Breton, learned last Friday that he had been infected with the virus. Four days later, doctors had to connect the young Fort McMurray worker to an Edmonton hospital ventilator.
It was then a shock to his family in Nova Scotia.

Guyline Ouellet flew in to be with her brother this week.
But his mother is still in Glass Bay, Cape Breton. She cannot travel due to her advanced age and the pandemic.
So she confines herself to text messages to her son, such as the lyrics of songs she sang when he was a kid.

It is thanks to the generosity of the community that Guillain Ouellet was able to buy a plane ticket to be with her brother.
Danielle’s cousin started a fundraiser on social media.
More than $8,000 was raised in less than a week.

As of Wednesday, 666 people were hospitalized in Alberta, of whom 146 were in intensive care. The province is badly hit by a third wave of the disease and Premier Jason Kenney this week announced strict health measures.
