Man praises doctors who saved his life after two cars collided in a catastrophic crash

A man who was killed in a two-car crash has praised doctors who saved his life.

James Kink is fortunate to have survived life-threatening injuries following a collision in May 2017.

James, a resident of Donald, is now raising money for his life-saving ICU.

He is unable to walk without assistance and uses a wheelchair, Belfast Live Reports.

He spent six weeks in the Ulster Hospital Intensive Care Unit after the crash, and as a way to thank the doctors and nurses who saved his life, he has raised a fund to raise some money for the ward.

James has decided that to do this he wants to set himself a challenge, walking 20 miles around his local David Lloyd’s gym swimming pool.

Walking in the water is the only time that James is able to walk around without help.

James said: “I think I want to give people back to Ulster Hospital’s A&E and intensive care unit because they saved my life.

“I got strange care when I had an accident, they went beyond the call on duty all the time.

“Now that I’m fit enough, I’ve decided to give my time back.

“The only thing I can do is walk in the pool with the help of a life jacket and lengthen it.

“The length of the pool is 64 miles and my goal is to complete 20 miles and all the money will be donated to the NHS.”

The James fundraiser began its fundraising efforts in early October and has so far managed to walk more than 12 miles in the pool.

Her mother, Ellen Fowles, said she was proud of her efforts and praised David Lloyd’s staff for their support.

She said: “The treatment James received after his accident was incredible.

“Without his help he wouldn’t be where he is today. James is determined to do something to give them back and walking in the pool is the only way he can do it without help, he decided this was the best way.

“We are very grateful to everyone at David Lloyd for taking up this challenge to accommodate James and thank the wonderful staff at Ulster Hospital.”
