MHL: Blizzards win spectacular overtime against Mariners

Jeremy Duguay threw from defender Jake Messel, on the lone breakaway, to sow joy on the bench for Blizzards, who had left southwestern Nova Scotia with four points in four games. Duguay’s goal in his 5th game was his fifth goal of the season. He added an assist on the tying goal.

Forward Ethan Johnson allowed overtime by making a tie in a power play at the end of the third period. In his 22nd game in the Maritime Hockey League, Johnson could not have chosen a better time to score the first goal of his career.

After goals from Hunter Livingston and the Mariners’ Reilly Mayne in the first period, Jeremy Thibodeau gave Blizzards hope by scoring with a wrist shot in the second period. It was the second trap for Blizzard’s big back.

Edmundston led the shots in each period of regulation and dominated the game 41–27. Goalkeepers Nicolas Sheehan (Blizzard) and Christophe Beluse (Mariners) provided a solid performance. Dauguay (1st), Thibodeau (second) and Belus (third) were chosen as meeting stars.

Blizzard comes home with an overall record of 5 wins and 2 losses. Despite a strong start with 10 points, Edmundston is fourth in the Summerside-dominated Eastlink North section, followed by Campbelton and Frederickton. Emery Olson’s men will play their next game at Grand Falls next Friday.
