(Halifax) The discovery of Nova Scotia was suspended indefinitely after a sinking fishing boat west of Cape Breton.
Authorities ended the search when one of the fishermen was missing on Sunday evening. Elsipogtog First Nation reported the deaths of two of the five crew members hours earlier.
On Twitter, the Halifax Joint Rescue Coordination Center stated that it had “made a decision based on search results in the last 25 hours.”
According to Lieutenant Commander Brian Owens, the chances of the fifth fisherman being found alive are very slim. Inter alia, “this time was potentially spent in the water of this person” came to the authorities.
Rescuers received an initial distress call from Chetikamp from FV Tyhawk around 5:45 pm Saturday. They lost signal when the boat capsized.
Another local boat was able to assist four of the crew.
Elsipogtog First Nation expressed condolences on Facebook, confirming the deaths of two fishermen. The head of the indigenous community and the council did not reveal the victims’ identities or say whether the missing fishermen were among them.
According to a spokesman for the Joint Rescue Coordination Center, a helicopter and a military aircraft were dispatched to the scene of the sinking after signs of distress, but they were again grounded due to bad weather conditions. Then, the CCGS Cape Roger captured the water.
On Sunday, Owens said the search would not resume until new information was revealed.
The file was to be transferred to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
