Reinhold Messner is critical of some young environmentalists

ROM (DPA) — Extreme climber Reinhold Messner, 76, doesn’t believe in young, critical people who aren’t ready for change in their daily lives.

“I do not like young people who say that we old people have destroyed the world without the strength to change our lifestyles,” the Italian of the “Corire della Sera” newspaper said on Thursday.

Messner recently married for the third time. He and his new wife, Diane Schumacher, about 35 years her junior from Luxembourg, share some passions, including mountains.

“At my age, being with someone is nice and enjoyable. I have done hundreds of solo climbs, now I can share these passions, interests and lifestyles with one person, the difference being that my wife is faster,” said the enthusiastic Messner. “In our valley, on our farm, we can be a little self-sufficient and show that even on a small scale in this way the world can be saved.”

South Tyroleans themselves were active in environmental politics and advocated for sustainability and climate protection.
