Thousands of protesters took to the streets of London on Sunday in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, gathering outside the American embassy in a show of solidarity with George Floyd, who was killed by police officers in Minneapolis in May.

Protesters marching in the capital joined on Sunday singing “matter of black lives”, with many placards and posters with the same message; a protester standing outside the American embassy had a sign that said, “Black lives win your ego, Mr. President.”

In a symbolic tribute to Floyd, who died after police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee to Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, the protesters remained silent for eight minutes while on their knees.

Others were also seen staging an “irreducible” demonstration alongside the police officers who lined up in front of the embassy building.

“Together, we will let our voices be heard. When it is too much, it is too much. Black people cannot continue to suffer, ”a protester turned to the crowd.

Meanwhile: Similar demonstrations take place in other parts of the UK; in Bristol, the British media video broadcast shows protesters pulling down a statue of Edward Colston, a 17th-century slave trader.

While the UK government has urged citizens not to demonstrate beyond fears that the protest could lead to the further spread of the coronavirus, the protest has seen significant turnout.

Little social distance has been observed – due to the high turnout – but many protesters wear masks or facings, while organizers say volunteers in high-visibility jackets will distribute masks and water to the protesters.
