Hockey. The Voltigers added a dose of experience and depth to their defensive brigade by getting Shaun Stewart in the trade with the Islanders on Thursday.

In exchange for the 20-year-old defenseman, Drummondville handed Charlottetown a tenth-round pick in 2024.

“We want to give him a chance to show off,” explained Voltigeurs general manager Philippe Boucher. Stewart is a defensive back who brings a physical dimension and leadership. His experience will keep everyone in our youth defense safe.”

With Stewart’s arrival, the Voltiggers find themselves with four 20-year veterans on their roster as the limit has been set to three players of that age in uniform. Along with defenseman Jacob Dion, forwards Edouard Charon and Charlie da Fonseca are also preparing to play a final season in the QMJHL.

“We will take time to assess the situation in the next few weeks. We do not set a date. Two years ago, we laid off four 20-year-olds for two months because of injury,” recalled Philippe Boucher.

Last season, Stewart had five points (1-4) in 35 games with the Islanders and Moncton Wildcats. The 6-foot, 1-inch, 180-pound athlete has also appeared in eight playoff games.

After Stewart was put into business with the Wildcats last winter, Jim Hulton described him as a fierce competitor. The Islanders’ general manager praised his courage and perseverance.

A Nova Scotia native, Stewart was an 11th round pick by the Wildcats in 2017. In his career in the QMJHL, he has 162 game experience including the playoffs.
