Bonsia Dortmund striker Yusufa Moukoko, aged 16 years and 18 days, became the youngest player in the history of the Champions League on Tuesday when he won 2-1 away from Zenit St. Petersburg.
Cameroon-born Mooko, who made his European debut as a 58th-minute substitute in Russia, broke the previous record of Celestein Babero, who was 16 years and 87 days old when he played for Anderlecht in November 1994.
Dortmund, who had already qualified for the last 16, equalized within minutes of Moukoko’s presentation, with Lucas Pizzazk scoring Sebastian Drusino’s first half.
Minutes won the game for Dortmund with a low shot from Axel Whitsell in the 78th minute as they took the top spot in Group F ahead of Lazio.
“It was an ugly win that was more about our mindset than our quality, but you also have to win games like this,” Dortmund captain Marco Reus told DZN.
“Even with all of the above injuries, a win like tonight and the final top impact of the group looks good.”
Moukoko, who has already played in the German Under-20s, broke the record for the second time in three weeks after becoming the youngest player in the Bundesliga on 21 November, the second day of his 16th birthday.
He was promoted to Dortmund’s senior team after setting a record for scoring in German youth football, having initially relocated to his father’s hometown of Hamburg, from Cameroon in 2014.
