Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has said the idea of a breakaway European Super League would be beyond the 70-year football history.
According to the Scotsman, fans love the Champions League.
About 15 of Europe’s biggest clubs are in talks to start a separatist league.
The league, which has been commissioned in the 2023/2024 season, already has $ 6bn (£ 4.3bn) of funds to support the project.
“To speak of a Super League is to go away from 70 years of European club football,” Ferguson told Reuters.
“Both as a player for the Dunframeline provincial team in the 60s and as a coach in Aberdeen for a small provincial club in Scotland to win the European Cup Winners’ Cup, it was like climbing Mount Everest.
“Everton are spending £ 500 million to build a new stadium with the ambition to play in the Champions League. Fans around the world love the competition.
“In my time at United we played four Champions League finals and they have always been the most special nights.
He said: “I’m not sure Manchester United are involved because I’m not part of the decision-making process.”
