Olympic Hockey: National Coach Al Saadi named squad for EM and Olympics

Cologne (SID) – National hockey coach Kais Al Saadi on Friday announced squads for the European Championships in Amsterdam (June 4-13) and the Olympic Games in Tokyo (July 23-August 8). As announced by the German Hockey Association (DHB), the nomination was still subject to approval by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB).

Al Saadi awarded only 15 squad places out of 16 for the Games in Tokyo. The currently injured Matt Grambusch (Rot-Weiss Cologne) must show his form at a seminar in Valencia at the end of June. If the 28-year-old is not fit in time, the coaching team will determine a replacement.

“This nomination is the result of a one-and-a-half year campaign. It was a long period in which all players had ample opportunity to prove their performance,” said Al Saadi. We weren’t looking for the best person. Players, we were looking for the best team.”

Along with Grambush, the DHB team will have ten players who won the bronze medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. There are also three Olympic champions in Tokyo with Tobias Hawke (2008 and 2012), Florian Fuchs (2012) and Martin Hainer (2012). – German Olympic team at a glance:
