Women's World Cup: Hockey Canada turns to Calgary

The World Women’s Hockey Championship will actually take place, with Hockey Canada looking to Calgary to host the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) tournament.

Alberta Public Health has thus approved the event’s 22nd presentation, which will take place from August 20 to 31, 2021.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, just six weeks after the Nova Scotia government decided to cancel the World Cup at the last minute. The world’s best players initially met in Halifax and Truro from May 6 to 16.

“Despite the unfortunate cancellation of the championship in April, Hockey Canada’s priority has always been to host the event this year. “We are committed to bringing a world-class event to Canada,” Hockey Canada President and COO Scott Smith said in a statement.

Ten teams will play a total of 31 sports at the WinSport Arena to receive the gold medal. The reigning champion is the American, who won the ninth coronation in Finland in 2019. The 2020 edition, scheduled for Nova Scotia, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
