Italy again! Switzerland will meet these opponents in the World Cup qualifier

Petkovic on World Cup qualifying group: “Not easy, but possible”

The Swiss national team will take on Italy, Northern Ireland, Bulgaria and Lithuania in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. National coach Vladimir Petkovic talks about opportunities in Switzerland.

07.12.2020

In Zurich on Monday, groups qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar were drawn into a virtual ceremony. The Swiss national team will meet Italy – such as in EM 2021.

After the European Championship, Switzerland will compete again with our southern neighbor Italy. Other opponents are Northern Ireland, Bulgaria and Lithuania.

Qualification begins next March and ends with playoff knockout games a year later. Ten group winners directly qualify for the final round, while the runners-up have three tickets to the playoffs. The final in Qatar will be from November 21 to December 18, 2022.

Duel with the strong people of Italy

Along with four-time world champions and southern neighbors, Italian lottery angel Daniel de Rossi gave the Swiss an attractive but difficult lot from the first pot. The Italians recently won all ten games in the European Championship qualification, and they also reached the final four in the Nations League without losing. Squadra Azurra was last lost by Roberto Manchini for more than two years in the League of Nations against Portugal (0: 1).

The first pairing with Italy for more than ten years is an added attraction for national coach Vladimir Petkovic as his past as coach of Lazio Rome and Serie A veterans Ricardo Rodriguez (Torino), Remo Freiler (Atalanta Bergamo) And is for Simon. Soham (Parma).

In return, Switzerland was spared the most unpleasant tasks from a sports and travel-related point of view. Northern Ireland from the third pot still knows the SFV selection from the tough playoffs for the 2018 World Cup. At the time, the Swiss won with an overall score of 1-0.

Netherlands, Turkey and Norway in a group

Defending champions France will face Ukraine and Finland in Group D. European champions Portugal will face Serbia and Ireland in Group A, England will play against Poland in Group I. Group G is tough with the Netherlands, Turkey and Norway.

Austria may consider itself lucky, having previously drawn from the pot from Denmark and also meets Scotland, Israel, the Faroe Islands and Moldova. Germany also had luck with Romania and Iceland as adversaries of Destiny 2 and 3. Liechtenstein is also in the Germany group.

A total of 55 European countries are represented in the qualification. Due to political and geographical reasons, some teams could not be drawn into the same group. In the group runners-up playoffs, the two United Nations group winners who are not yet eligible will also be able to participate. Due to coronaviruses, the draw did not happen as usual with Gala, but virtually.
