Düsseldorf Rapidly rising energy costs have made many Germans think about replacing their heating systems. There is some information and offers – but which type of heating is the cheapest? Given the high energy prices, it is not only the acquisition cost that matters, but also what consumers pay for the operation. It is difficult to compare current prices.

Handelsblatt worked with the North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Advice Center to calculate how expensive it is to heat a typical German four-person home using a variety of techniques. The sample count refers to a free-standing single-family house, built in 1985 with 150 square meters of living space.

How much consumers pay for heaters over the years depends on a number of small factors, such as frequency of maintenance, evolving electricity and gas costs, and the lifespan of different types of heating. Not everything can be taken into account in sample calculations, it does not replace a professional full cost comparison, but it is a good starting point to get a preliminary overview.
